Dan Quinn’s locker room speech after loss to Broncos summarizes state of the Commanders in ‘Hard Knocks’ premiere
Dan Quinn says the Commanders found their way back in the loss to the Broncos.
The Washington Commanders fell to 3-9 after losing a heartbreaker in overtime against the Denver Broncos.
It wasn’t a loss like we’ve seen all season — it was the team’s best performance. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin returned and showed what he’s still capable of, while the defense continued to play well under head coach Dan Quinn.
The feeling around the team was completely different after the loss, and we saw exactly how much on the series premiere of “Hard Knocks: In Season with the NFC East.”
Dan Quinn drops one-liner in the locker room after loss that defines the Commanders
I can speak for everyone when I say that we were all proud of the fight that the Commanders put up against one of the best teams in the league. We’ve grown used to seeing blowout losses this season, and the overtime loss to the Broncos was a momentum-building game. Quinn is a very passionate head coach, and his locker room speech showed that the Commanders are still a strong team that has a lot of potential.
He dropped a one-liner that every player and fan should hear: “We lost, but we’re not lost anymore.” This team finally found itself after having to dig deep in an overtime loss against a strong playoff team.
“Hard Knocks” was supposed to be filming a Super Bowl run for the Commanders this season, but the season clearly didn’t go that way. Moments like this, though, are what people watch for. We see what happens on the field, and the team’s fight not to give up, but the raw reaction in the locker room after a tough loss shows what this team is made of. Quinn talked after the game in his press conference about the team’s fight.
“I thought coming off the field, it just felt like those are the games you do love to be a part of,” Quinn said. “The absolute battles. Two teams, like going for it, throwing punches back and forth, and you know, I hate the outcome, but I loved the fight. It’s been tough as h– for a while. And I thought our guys played hard as h–. All improving. I saw where we can get better, and obviously, there’s plenty of room to continue to do that.”
The Commanders can end the season on a high note
A lot of fans have checked out after seeing how the season has gone, but there are still plenty of things worth watching in the final five games. The Commanders have seen many young players contribute, veterans playing better, and players returning from injury. The team is 3-9, and playoffs are very slim at this point, but ending the season with momentum and fight is just as important as landing a top draft pick after the season.
The Commanders have the Minnesota Vikings next, and then four straight NFC East games against the New York Giants, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Philadelphia Eagles twice. Seeing some fight while evaluating the roster is the season’s biggest goal, and the loss to the Broncos was a sign of life.
