Commanders hire first member of David Blough’s staff as the new offensive coordinator, and it directly impacts Jayden Daniels
The Commanders are hiring D.J. Williams as the new QB coach for David Blough’s first staff as offensive coordinator.
The Washington Commanders were quick to fill the offensive coordinator position once they moved on from Kliff Kingsbury, and now they had to fill out the rest of the staff.
David Blough was promoted to offensive coordinator for the first time in his career, and the Commanders have to surround him with support on the staff. They conducted interviews with top QB coaching candidates around the league and finally made a hire.
Jayden Daniels will now work with D.J. Williams as the Commanders’ new QB coach.
Commanders hire D.J. Williams as the new QB coach
Blough had to find a replacement for his prior role as QB coach, a critical position with a direct impact on Daniels’ development. The Commanders interviewed other candidates, including Mike Bercovici, who worked with Daniels at Arizona State, but hired Williams from the Atlanta Falcons.
Williams is the son of Washington legend Doug Williams, who holds an executive position with the Commanders. Williams has worked with Michael Penix Jr. since drafting him in 2024, serving as his QB coach. Now, he gets to work with another top quarterback from the 2024 NFL Draft class.
The Falcons made their own coaching changes, so Williams was free to explore external opportunities with the next head coach and offensive coordinator likely to bring in their own staff. Williams is another young coach who hasn’t been in the league long. Now, he joins the Commanders’ youth movement, which was very much needed.
Should fans worry about the younger coaches?
The Commanders are reaching uncharted territory, going from Kliff Kingsbury, who has been around for a long time and has done it all in the NFL, to coaches who are new to it all. This was needed, though. Younger minds and fresher ideas keep up with the modern game, and everything the Commanders did looked old and slow last year.
The team needed to get younger on the roster and coaching staff, and they have certainly done so on offense throughout the coaching cycle. The defensive coordinator hire could be the opposite: an experienced, big-name coordinator, with Dan Quinn as the head coach overseeing both sides.
We already know Daniels will share his thoughts and input with the coaching staff, and Blough needs a solid hire as he integrates his new offense into the team. Now, GM Adam Peters must get to work and continue building the roster for success. It’ll also be worth monitoring whether Brian Johnson and Anthony Lynn remain on the staff as experienced coaches or move to another team.
