The Washington Commanders are 3-10 and have a crucial offseason ahead, but they still have four games left, including an NFC East showdown against the New York Giants.

The Commanders have more than just their draft pick order at stake against the Giants, as they could be looking to keep one coach from potentially joining the NFC East rival this offseason. It is expected that offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will at least be interviewed for head coaching positions this offseason, but now he’s officially being linked to his first specific team.

Dianna Russini with the Athletic says that Kingsbury is on the Giants’ list of candidates they’re interested in, which wouldn’t be ideal for the Commanders’ offseason.

The New York Giants have interest in Kliff Kingsbury as a head coach candidate

The Giants weren’t the first team to fire their head coach this season, but they still did it early enough to get a head start on who they could be interested in. Of course, there are still a few games left this season for both the NFL and in college, but top head coach candidates are starting to emerge as we head into January.

Russini says the Giants have a strong list of candidates, and Kingsbury is one of them.

“The New York Giants have a list of candidates for their head-coaching vacancy. I’m told the names on it include Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. . .and Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman.” – Dianna Russini, The Athletic

The Commanders already need to find a new defensive coordinator who can come in and completely overhaul one of the worst defenses in the league, and hopefully bring in a new scheme. Adding an offensive coordinator to the list wouldn’t be ideal with Jayden Daniels needing to be coached by someone new after a disastrous season. The Commanders have plenty of things to worry about this offseason, but will Kingsbury actually be one of them?

Could Kliff Kingsbury be a legit head coach candidate?

Of course, 2025 hasn’t been the season anyone expected for the Commanders, but it was doomed from the start for the offense when wide receiver Terry McLaurin held out for almost all of training camp. The offseason injuries didn’t help either, carrying over into the season and forcing McLaurin and Daniels to miss most of the games.

Kingsbury is still a 46-year-old offensive-minded coach that teams would love to have. Washington fans will rip Kingsbury, and of course, he’s not perfect, but he’s been trying to make diamonds with mud all season.

Kingsbury had to coach through Daniels playing in only four full games this season, losing Austin Ekeler for the season, a depleted wide receiver room with Deebo Samuel and Chris Moore as the starters for most of the season, and a defense that put the team down double digits early and often.

Last season, he showed what he could do when players stayed healthy, and didn’t have the flashiest talent outside of Daniels and McLaurin then, either. The Giants would love to pair him with Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo, and Malik Nabers when they get healthy, while the team continues to build around their young core.

I don’t see them getting Marcus Freeman, so Kingsbury might be higher on the list by the time the season ends.
