The Washington Commanders hit a new low in 2025 with a disappointing season, and something needed to change.

They didn’t hold back or waste time after moving on from both coordinators the day after their end of season press conference, and the search for new ones kicked off. Parting ways with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was a bold move in itself, but promoting a young coach as the new offensive coordinator for the first time in his career is even bolder.

David Blough’s promotion was a shock that received a wave of reactions from the fan base, and apparently, around the entire NFL as well.

The search ended early for the Commanders when they decided to promote Blough before any other team hired a new offensive coordinator, but it may have been the right call. Blough has never called plays or run his own offense before, so it’s a move that took guts.

Fans were shocked by the decision, but the NFL world had its own reaction, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

“Offense is going to be fascinating,” Rapoport said. “I don’t know what Commanders fans thought when they saw, like, how old is Blough? 30? I don’t know what they thought, but my phone blew up. I was fortunate enough to break that one, and so I sort of, like, thought there was a chance, or kind of kept it quiet. Everybody was like, oh, man, that’s the guy. I mean, that’s, you know, and there’s sort of a trend now for like, these young former quarterbacks or becoming offensive coordinators. Eagles did the same thing, you know, I think most people have thought Blough would be an offensive coordinator or a head coach since when he was, like, 22? So, like, you know, I was, like, a little surprised, but he’s going to be a coordinator eventually. Why not the commanders? You know, doesn’t have the experience, but I am, like, really interested in how this goes, because he’s supposed to be excellent.”

Commanders fans should be excited for David Blough

Yes, Blough hasn’t called his own offense before, and he’s still a big unknown, but there’s been nothing but high praise for him from others around the league. Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson gave him a raving review when asked about him, and even said he’s an up-and-coming young head coach in the league.

Fans should embrace the unknown and the change, while still knowing that there’s a familiarity with quarterback Jayden Daniels. The offense needed a change, and a new system in Washington will go a long way.
