The Washington Commanders (5-2), as well as the entire fanbase and a good chunk of the NFL world, have been awaiting word on Jayden Daniels' rib injury he suffered against the Carolina Panthers (1-6) in Week 7.
Even if Daniels' mom tweeted "He's fine." during Sunday's blowout win.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn updated Daniels' injury on Monday afternoon when he spoke with reporters and it sounds like everything is going to be OK, but Daniels will be considered as "week-to-week". Therefore, it's unlikely he plays against the Chicago Bears (4-2) on Sunday. At the same time, though, the Commanders dodged a bullet, since it's not considered anything long-term.
"The status for Jayden, we'll put down as week to week as you guys know, it's a rib injury, and we'll take him through all the steps at practice and assess how he's doing and keep working it through that," said Quinn. "We're hopeful he can play, but we'll also make sure to take every precautionary step and do it smartly for the player and the man…
"… We'll see where he is going through the steps at practice this week, and we'll make a decision as we go, but literally, like, we're not going to miss this all the way through. It's really important to get it right."
If Daniels can't go this week, veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota will step in like he did against the Panthers. Mariota played admirably, completing nearly 80% of his passes for 205-yards and two touchdowns. He also added 34 rushing yards on 11 carries.
"I wasn't surprised to see Marcus perform well. We've all seen it," said Quinn. "What I thought was really strong was this the guy that missed a month, you know, of being on IR at the start, and so for him to battle back from an injury and get back into the reps – that took work to do that."
We'll see how the week plays when out when it comes to Daniels' availability, but off the bat, it doesn't sound like he's trending toward playing this week. At the same time, it's not going to be anything long-term, which is a win in itself.
