We have all been waiting for an update on the Washington Commanders’ franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels after he ended the game limping on Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers, and we finally have a diagnosis.

Reports are saying that Daniels’ MRI on his knee came back with some good news and some bad news. You never want your quarterback to get hurt, but this could have been a lot worse.

Daniels’ knee injury update

Daniels took way too many hits on Thursday night and came up limping late in the fourth quarter as he tried to battle back in the game, and now he’s dealing with a sprained knee, according to reports.

A sprained knee can keep Daniels out of the game on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, even after the long break in between games. I would be surprised if Daniels actually practiced this week, let alone played against the Raiders. It’s not worth risking this early in the season when you have Marcus Mariota, who has shown he can win games, as your backup quarterback.

Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media on Monday and gave updates on Daniels.

“Here’s what I know,” Quinn said. “He did have an MRI, and he’s already begun his return to play process with us. He is truly day to day. What does that mean for Sunday? I can’t tell you that now. I’ll share more when we get to Wednesday. But in the return to play, he and all of the guys have to hit all of the markers.”

Quinn also said that they will absolutely make sure they hit all the markers as they do for every player coming back from injury. I’d expect Daniels to wear a brace on his knee to avoid any other injuries. He said after the game that he was fine, but he also had his leg heavily wrapped, according to Jeremy Fowler.

Mariota can win games still

We saw last season that Mariota can come in and pick up where Daniels left off. Daniels went down last season with his rib injury, and Mariota came in and beat the Carolina Panthers. He also played against the Dallas Cowboys in a crucial game late in the season, and went 34 for 44 with 364 passing yards and four touchdowns with no turnovers.

Mariota is a capable starter that fits the offense perfectly, but the Raiders are no slouch, and will be an ultimate test on how this offense would look without Daniels. We will learn more throughout the week on how Daniels looks and what his status for the game will be.

Will Daniels push through it and play, or will the Commanders tell Daniels to take the week off and get right for the rest of the season?
