Last season was all about becoming the best quarterback he can be for the Washington Commanders, but this season, Jayden Daniels is stepping up as more of a local leader, and that starts in practice.
Players and coaches have already noticed a major change in the leadership of Daniels, who is usually a quiet player, and how he’s stepping up to help protect the standard the team has built. A fellow teammate even said that Daniels recently kicked a player out of the huddle after a false start in practice.
Setting the standard and holding accountability
Veteran running back Austin Ekeler said that Daniels kicked one teammate out of the huddle in practice on Thursday after he committed a false start penalty.
“He said, ‘Get out, we can’t be doing that,’” Ekeler said. “That’s leadership we wouldn’t have seen last year. He’s holding the standard, letting everyone know this is how we play. If you’re not playing at this level, you can’t be on the field. That’s awesome to see in a quarterback.” – John Keim, ESPN
We haven’t seen that side of Daniels yet, but he knows that this is part of the job of being the franchise quarterback in Washington. Daniels also spoke to the media after practice on Thursday and spoke on his growing leadership role, and how they need to protect the standard they built last season.
“I think there’s a standard that we set on the offensive side,” Daniels told the media. “I’m the one that’s got to uphold the standard, and that’s if guys are false-starting, you know, next guy up. Even for me, it’s like holding myself accountable. If I mess up, I look to Zach. I’ll look to guys like that to hold me accountable too.”
We saw the team’s full support of Daniels in his rookie season, and they gained massive respect for him as the season progressed. Everyone knows he is the franchise quarterback and one of the best in the league. Daniels put the team on his back in just about every game last season, and the team would do the same for him. It was time to grow from a leadership standpoint, though, and not just his skill set on the field.
Coach Quinn always talks about the traits of being a Commander, having an aligned vision, and setting the culture of the team, and your franchise quarterback is the most important person to instill those beliefs in the team on the field. The vocal leader side of Daniels has officially arrived, and he’s going to do what it takes to protect the Super Bowl standards of the team.
