Kliff Kingsbury left the door wide open on the biggest question this offseason that could change everything for the Commanders
Kliff Kingsbury didn’t shut down the idea of leaving for a head coaching opportunity this offseason, which would add another hurdle for the Commanders to clear.
The Washington Commanders only have two more games left this year until the nightmare of a season is finally over, and the offseason begins.
General manager Adam Peters has a long list of tasks this offseason, from fixing the coaching staff to rebuilding the roster. One of the top priorities has to be finding a defensive coordinator to fix the struggles we saw all season long, and there might be another coordinator opening coming up.
The Commanders already lost quarterback coach Tavita Pritchard weeks ago, and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is rumored to have interest from teams for head coaching interviews. Kingsbury was asked about the idea, and he left the possibility wide open.
Kliff Kingsbury doesn’t shut down the idea of becoming a head coach elsewhere this offseason
Kingsbury has been linked to other teams already, such as the New York Giants, and there will likely be more on the radar over the next few weeks. This is a very defensive-minded head coach pool of candidates coming up in this coaching cycle, and Kingsbury could be one of the only offensive-minded candidates available. Having an offensive coach would be huge for teams that have young quarterbacks or will be drafting one in the offseason.
With only two games left, Kingsbury was asked about the possibility of interviewing for head coaching positions again, and he surely didn’t say no.
“Yeah, we’ll see how that plays out,” Kingsbury said. “But you know, today, just trying to get one of these quarterbacks ready to play on a short week.”
Possible landing spots for Kliff Kingsbury
The Giants and the Tennessee Titans already have head coach openings, but there are still plenty of possible landing spots that haven’t made a decision just yet. The Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, and Las Vegas Raiders are the three other destinations that are trending towards a coaching change that could have interest in Kingsbury. All three are projected to have young quarterbacks as their starters next season as well.
This would leave the Commanders in a tough situation
Losing Jayden Daniels’ quarterback coach and offensive coordinator wouldn’t be ideal, and they would have to find two new coordinators in the most important offseason since Peters and Quinn took over. Next season is all about keeping Daniels healthy while still developing, and learning a new offense is the last thing they should want to add to his plate.
There are already so many obstacles the team needs to clear, with a lack of draft capital, a lot of free agents to make decisions on, and possibly two new coordinators to add under Quinn. Kingsbury might end up staying, but he doesn’t sound like someone who is very sure of his future just yet.
