Top NFL head coach praised David Blough, but wasn’t happy about his promotion for one specific reason
One NFC head coach had nothing but positive words about David Blough, but hated to see the Commanders promote him as the new offensive coordinator.
The Washington Commanders are looking to get back on track in 2026, and a lot of it will be in the hands of two new coordinators.
Head coach Dan Quinn decided to promote from within and give quarterback Jayden Daniels a familiar face in David Blough as the new offensive coordinator. Blough will be installing a new offensive system this offseason, built around Daniels, and likely use the system he played in with the Detroit Lions.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about Blough at the NFL Scouting Combine, and he gave him the highest praise, yet admitted he didn’t want to see him promoted.
Dan Campbell loves David Blough and wanted him with the Lions
This offseason, we heard Blough’s name come up a couple of times, just like it did the year before, and the Lions were among the teams looking to interview him for their offensive coordinator role. Campbell admitted that he wanted Blough and thinks he has all the potential in the world.
“I love Blough,” Campbell said. “I mean, he was one of the guys that I wanted to bring in. And, you know, coach Quinn and those guys went ahead and named him OC, which is smart by them. I think he is a young, rising coach in this league. I’ve been around him firsthand, and he’s another one man. He’s sharp. You know, he understands football and quarterback play, he knows the run game, and he’s a detailed guy, and he’s a competitive man. He’s very competitive. So I think he’s going to do a great job.”
That’s high praise from one of the best head coaches in the league, who has also seen his own coordinators go on to take head coaching jobs elsewhere. Campbell wasn’t the only one to praise Blough, as Ben Johnson also had nothing but positive words for his future.
The Commanders need to build around Jayden Daniels to support David Blough
Blough will be calling an offense for the first time in his young coaching career, and now the Commanders need to build the roster to support him and Daniels both. He already said he’s looking to give WR Terry McLaurin 10 targets a game in the new offense, but they also need more weapons.
The Commanders also need to sure up the run game with only Bill Croskey-Merritt under contract next season, so expect a new RB or two added to the roster this offseason. Regardless, the hire of Blough has aged well, and we could be looking at the future of Washington if everything goes as top coaches around the league expect.
