Major questions continue to surround Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin after latest Commanders injury updates
The latest update on the Commanders’ two star players.
The Washington Commanders are preparing to hit the road to take on the Atlanta Falcons, but there are many road bumps the team is currently dealing with.
The roster has taken a hit with the injury bug through the first three games, including two of the best players that will be needed for the long haul. Franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels missed last week with his knee injury, and the hits kept coming after Terry McLaurin left the game early with an injury of his own, along with many other players.
We finally got the anticipated injury update on both key starters, but we left with more questions than answers.
Jayden Daniels’ status is still in the air
Marcus Mariota stepped in at quarterback with no problem, and the offense dropped 41 points on the Las Vegas Raiders. The biggest question remains, though, when is Daniels coming back? After practicing on a very limited basis on Friday, we wondered when Daniels would take the practice field at full force. Quinn gave an update on Wednesday that really didn’t clear up Daniels’ injury, though.
“Let’s start with Jayden,” Quinn said. “He’ll continue in his return to play process, and you’ll see him out there today in a limited fashion, and we’ll continue to rely on the medical team, you know, to fully clear him. But what I can say is, man, he is doing everything you possibly can to get there. The guy’s the ultimate competitor for us.”
Sure enough, Daniels was at practice today on a very limited basis, and we still have no idea if he will be ready to play on Sunday or if he needs another week to deal, giving Mariota the start again. Daniels spoke to the media after practice, though, and said he feels “good enough” to play on Sunday, but it’s not his decision; it’s up to the doctors.
Terry McLaurin is the biggest unknown
McLaurin’s breakout game came at a cost, with him suffering a quad injury on his deep 56-yard catch that everyone has been waiting for. The significance of his injury, however, is the biggest question in Washington right now. Reports have said that McLaurin has received several opinions on what they believe is a quad injury, and he’s going to one of the best doctors in the country for a better understanding of his injury.
In his presser on Wednesday, Quinn said that this was very normal for a player to do, so should we overreact about McLaurin’s injury, or be optimistic about his status?
“Yeah, it’s pretty normal that when you have something that a second opinion takes place,” Quinn said. “That’s not uncommon at all. Honestly, it’s just the opposite. It’s really common. Almost everybody does that in some spaces. So as we get into it, I’ll have a better answer. You know, as I get into Friday, then we’ll have a sense of, ‘okay, where does it look like for Sunday?”
Trey Amos update
Another key starter had to leave the game early on the defensive side of the ball, and a lot of people have been worried about Trey Amos’ calf injury. Quinn didn’t speak about Amos’ health or how he’s feeling at all, but we did get an update that Amos was at practice today.
As always, the team will give us more injury information and game status updates on Friday when Quinn speaks to the media, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Commanders take on the Falcons without the top two players on the team in Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin.
