So far, Washington Commanders training camp practices have been centered around how Jayden Daniels looks with new weapons and a better offensive line, but that changed today.
The defense made it known they're also worth talking about and they came out on Day 3 with a vengeance and energy that ended the week on a high note.
Daniels doesn't need motivation in practice, but the defense gave him a reason to come back strong on Sunday and show out in front of Commanders fans.
Mike Sainristil sets the tone with big interception
Daniels and Sainristil were the two rookies who separated themselves last season as major impact players for the future. Both stepped up as franchise players in their rookie seasons, and the competition between the two will be a fun one to watch for years to come.
Sainristil is moving back into his natural slot position and he's already making noise. He set the tone early on Friday by picking off Daniels and of course, he had to chirp about it afterward.
According to reports, breakout candidate Quan Martin tipped the ball to Sainristil for the pick-six in practice.
Sainristil also reminded the team that he loves to stick his nose in the backfield after he blew up a screen going to KJ Osborn behind the line, and Bobby Wagner showed him love after the play.
Future Hall-of-Famer shows he's still got it
Bobby Wagner will go down as one of the all-time greats and has a gold jacket waiting for him, but some people are still doubting what he can do in coverage at this point of his career.
We know Wagner is still one of the best when it comes to reading out plays and stopping the run, but he made a statement with an impressive interception against Daniels as well.
Washington's defense can take a major step forward if Wagner gets some of his coverage ability back this season. The interception was described as a "full extension" grab across the middle of the field. Father Time can kick rocks.
Everyone got the best of the QBs today
Sainristil and Wagner got the party started and set the tone early and it spread throughout the entire defense.
Second-year safety Tyler Owens picked off backup QB Marcus Mariota and he's been getting rotation time with the starters as well to test out his growth and development.
Trey Amos and Marshon Lattimore added their contributions as well as Amos picked off Daniels in the end zone; while Lattimore had a pass breakup at the goal line against Chris Moore.
The defense is expected to be ahead of the offense at this point of training camp, but as the weaker side of the ball for the Commanders, this is very encouraging to see at practice. This also fuels some extra motivation for the franchise quarterback to get his revenge and add some excitement for fans showing up on Sunday.
