The NFL cracks down on Commanders LB Frankie Luvu with unfortunate news after he repeats mistake from last year
Frankie Luvu’s past catches up to him again.
The Washington Commanders are ready to kick off against the Los Angeles Chargers, but one player received some tough news to deal with before the game.
Frankie Luvu is known for his aggressive tone-setting on defense, but sometimes he pushes the limit too far, and it comes back to bite him. The NFL is cracking down on penalties around the league, and Luvu was hit with his first fine of the season on a play that he needs to stop doing.
The NFL fines Luvu for a tackle
Before Luvu takes the field on Sunday, he has to dig deep into his pockets and fork up some money for a hit on Falcons’ quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The NFL hit Luvu with a $23,186 fine for a hip-drop tackle on Penix Jr. in the second quarter last Sunday.
Luvu came from behind Penix Jr. and did everything he needed to for the sack, but he performed a textbook hip-drop tackle that the league is getting rid of because of the dangers and injuries that come from it.
This isn’t Luvu’s first offense when it comes to hip-drop tackling. He was also fined against the Detroit Lions in the playoffs last season for $16,883 in addition to a roughing the passer penalty in the same game. Luvu’s first fine as a Commander came against the Philadelphia Eagles in his viral jump over the line to stop the “Tush Push” play at the goalline, which landed him a $11,255 fine.
Referees are cracking down on penalties, and players like Luvu and Marhson Lattimore now have a history that follows them, and officials know who to keep an eye on. Luvu wasn’t the only linebacker to face a fine against the Falcons, though, with one rookie getting his first.
Ale Kaho gets his first NFL fine
Undrafted rookie Ale Kaho had his welcome-to-the-league moment on Sunday after getting fined $4,685 for an unnecessary roughness penalty where he used his helmet later in the third quarter. The fine is a decent amount for an undrafted rookie, and maybe this will help him not lead with his helmet moving forward.
The NFL is cracking down on plays, and Luvu knows that he’s one of the players for the Commanders that referees have a close eye on, following a few controversial plays last season. As a result, he has to be smart about his playing style.
