The Washington Commanders wasted no time dropping an absolute bombshell that has a drastic impact on their offseason and their franchise quarterback.

Dan Quinn is in complete control of all of the coaching staff decisions, and he decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury after a nightmare season. This is a risky move on many levels, but arguably the last chess move Quinn has to save his job.

It’s a move that won’t come without a ripple effect, and the latest reactions are shock and disappointment from the locker room.

NFL insider says Commanders players are disappointed and feel blindsided

If you thought the move was a shock for fans of the team, imagine how the players feel after having success with Kingsbury. The latest from NFL insider Jordan Schultz is that many players, including franchise QB Jayden Daniels, are disappointed and were blindsided by the move.

Kingsbury’s offense carried the team to the NFC Championship game in 2024, and was riddled with injuries and obstacles during the 2025 offseason and into the regular season. You could hear Kingsbury’s frustration when he talked about the injuries, the lack of players, and situations like Terry McLaurin’s contract holdout for all of training camp.

Jayden Daniels loses his offensive coordinator right after endorsing him

The obvious notable part of all of this is Daniels being frustrated or blindsided by the move. He had a remarkable rookie season under Kingsbury, but then became one of those players who missed a significant amount of time due to injuries out of his control. This move comes one day after Daniels endorsed Kingsbury and talked about their special connection and how much he loves working with him.

Daniels’ mom had her own message when the season ended with a mention of Daniels and Kingsbury running it back for a third season.

The locker room has the right to feel any way they want to about this move, because they’re the ones impacted the most. Kingsbury had a very unique offense with a college-type scheme to it, and whoever comes in next will change everything. The players, the scheme, and the skill traits needed in the offense will change everything. Some players will fit the new offense, while some won’t, and it’ll have a ripple effect on rebuilding the roster.

From blocking schemes to wide receivers needing to have certain traits, everything will be different, and the new offensive coordinator will have a lot of say in the roster rebuilding this offseason. Some players who you thought were safe might be the ones who end up going this offseason now. Is this the end of the world? Certainly not, and players will feel much better if Quinn can get the right hire, but that’s a big if, and not the best track record to go off of.
