The Washington Commanders are trying to put a big exclamation on the Thanksgiving holiday by snapping a three-game losing streak, but veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner's turkey day took a bit of a hit on Saturday.
That's because the NFL decided to fine Wagner $16,883 for roughing the passer/contact to the knee or below during the fourth quarter of the Commanders' 34-26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 12.
Specifically, the hit came with 14:17 left in the final quarter. Wagner went low on Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush on a 2nd and 11 pass attempt and was flagged for the hit. Rush completed the attempt for a seven-yard gain to wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, but the penalty obviously gave Dallas an automatic first down and placed the ball at its own 45-yard line. However, the Cowboys offense couldn't get any points out of the drive, so the penalty didn't have a huge affect on the game.
Wagner is having a really good year for the Commanders. He currently leads the defense in both combined tackles and solo tackles with 99 and 53, respectively. Per The Washington Posts Nicki Jhabvala, if he logs one more tackle against the Tennessee Titans, which he absolutely should, he'll become just the second player this century to record 100+ tackles in 13 straight seasons. The only other player to do that is former Redskins/Football Team/Commanders linebacker London Fletcher.
Wagner is also third on the team with seven tackles for loss. In all, he has 99 combined tackles, 53 solo tackles, 46 assisted tackles, 2.0 sacks, seven tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, one pass breakup, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
