Sources clear the air regarding controversy surrounding Commanders’ top NFL Draft prospect after concerning rumors
The Commanders can take a sigh of relief regarding a top option with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Washington Commanders were on site for the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine days ago, where they met face-to-face with the top prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Then, they watched them compete on the field and adjusted their draft boards accordingly. Another key part of the process is the medical examinations of prospects that can raise red flags for teams and even force them to remove players from their boards.
One of the most polarizing players in the NFL Draft was hit with very serious injury rumors that would have teams concerned, but those rumors have been strongly debunked, and the Commanders can still draft him with the No. 7 overall pick.
Caleb Downs’ injury rumors were put to rest
Ohio State safety Caleb Downs was hit with very serious injury rumors after the NFL Scouting Combine, when Cory Kinnan from Daft on Draft stated that Downs was flagged with a partially torn meniscus and a “potentially degenerative ACL”.
Those rumors went viral, of course, and the post on his Substack with the claims has since been deleted. The rumors have been addressed head-on, and we finally have clarity on the situation.
A to Z Sports writer Brandon Little did his own research, and he provided clarity to the allegations after sources debunked the rumors quickly. Little reports that the Downs family is calling the false reports “fake” and “clickbait” and that there were no medical concerns at all.
He also spoke to several teams who said the reports were “BS”, and that his “medicals came back relatively clean”, and “Downs’ medicals were not a concern on their radar”. This should put the false rumors to rest, and Pat McAfee even addressed it on his show and said he’s heard the same thing as Little.
The Commanders could still draft Caleb Downs at No. 7 overall
Downs didn’t do anything on the field at the scouting combine, but we saw what he put on film at Alabama and Ohio State, and he will be a top prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Commanders desperately need help in the safety room, and it’s one of their weakest positions on defense after EDGE.
Daronte Jones’ new defense needs high-quality safety play, and I don’t think any of the current safeties can provide that, except for Will Harris, who could be the third safety. Downs will be on the table at No. 7 overall in the draft, and the Commanders have to consider taking him since he’s arguably a top-3 player in the draft.
He’s not just a safety; he’s a field general and an instant staple to build around for years to come. The defense doesn’t have that true franchise player heading into free agency, and Downs is a true blue-chip player on and off the field.
