Terry McLaurin's contract situation with the Washington Commanders has officially hit a head.
McLaurin spoke publicly for the first time since he stopped showing up to Commanders practice and he didn't pull any punches when talking about the whole ordeal between him and general manager Adam Peters.
"I've been pretty frustrated. I'm not gonna lie," McLaurin told NBC Sports' JP Finlay during a commercial shoot at Easterns Automotive Group. "You know, everything that has transpired up until this point has been disappointing and frustrating. I wanted to continue my career here. I've created my life here. You know, my wife and I bought our first home here. So this has been somewhere where I've always wanted to be."
McLaurin's comments validate previous reports stating he was, in fact, frustrated with how the situation is unfolding. He also mentioned the fact he hasn't spoken about an extension with the Commanders in over a month, which is not a good look, at all.
He may not play football until everything is resolved, either, and that's a scary thought for both the Commanders and their fans.
"Since OTAs and minicamp, we haven't had any discussions. We haven't talked at all and, you know, that's tough. . . There has to be some active discussions," said McLaurin.
"We haven't talked in over a month, and obviously, with camp around the corner, it's becoming a little bit of crunch time. Obviously you want to be in a position where you're building to what we did last year and Jayden [Daniels] and I continue to build [that] along with the offense. And that's the thing, before I took a step back, it was things were going great on the field, and, you know, the connection in the offense and the energy was just amazing.
"So to see where it was then and where it's at now is definitely disappointing. So I don't necessarily know what happens next, but without any progressive discussion, it's kind of hard to see how I step on the field."
The Commanders have certainly made some questionable decisions this offseason. Paying Javon Kinlaw top dollar in order to replace Jonathan Allen, bypassing re-signing last year's sack leader Dante Fowler, and now the mess with McLaurin are three situations that have stalled some of the momentum that was built last season.
But it's the messy negotiations with McLaurin that truly strikes a chord. This guy is adored by both the fanbase and his teammates. He's one of the team's true leaders and he's Jayden Daniels' top weapon. The fallout of a McLaurin-less Commanders offense is something the team has to avoid, especially if it's serious about taking advantage of Daniels' rookie contract like it has said in the past.
McLaurin is right: it's crunch time. And if the Commanders don't get this figured out in a manner that gets McLaurin on the field in burgundy and gold then it will easily be considered the biggest failure of Peters' early tenure and who knows what future dominoes will fall as a result.
