The NFL wasn’t going to let the Commanders get away with it easily and dropped the hammer with a late, expensive punishment
The NFL made sure to punish the Commanders for their involvement in the massive brawl against the Eagles last week, and it’s an expensive one.
The Washington Commanders lost their last two games with a quick turnaround, and the NFL gave them one more loss heading into the weekend.
Everyone forgot about one major situation that we all knew would result in a punishment by the NFL because of the quick turnaround with the Christmas Day game against the Dallas Cowboys, but the NFL never forgets. It seems like forever ago, but the Commanders got into a major brawl against the Philadelphia Eagles a week ago, and now they’re having to pay for it right out of their pockets.
The NFL fined several Commanders for involvement in a brawl against the Eagles
Last Saturday, the Commanders tried to shock the world with an upset against the Eagles, but they came up short once Marcus Mariota went down, and the defense struggled again. That led to the Eagles driving down the field and scoring a touchdown to go up 27-10, and a controversial decision to go for a two-point conversion, which they made. This didn’t sit well with the Commanders, and an all-out brawl broke out, which led to Tyler Steen being ejected for the Eagles, and Javon Kinlaw and Quan Martin getting ejected for the Commanders.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn had strong words about it after the game, and said they will see them again in two weeks, and the rematch is right around the corner now. The NFL didn’t forget about it, though, and made sure to hand out even more punishment heading into the weekend for the player’s actions.
The NFL fined Steen $8,435 on two separate fines for unnecessary roughness and striking at several Commanders players. The Commanders were hit with the heavier fines, of course, just to add insult to injury. Safety Will Harris was fined $11,593 for grabbing a facemask in the fight. Kinlaw was fined a hefty $20,288 for swinging at a player as well. Martin was also fined $11,572 in addition to his ejection for swinging at a player. Finally, corner Mike Sainristil was fined $9,725 for throwing a strike as well, making this a fight worth over $50,000 in fines for the Commanders.
The rematch will be chippy next weekend in Philadelphia
If you thought the first game was chippy, just wait until the Week 18 rematch next weekend. As if Quinn’s postgame comments weren’t enough to get them motivated, the game will be in Philadelphia with a fired-up fan base. It’s also the last game of the season with the Commanders out of the playoffs, and the Eagles heading to the postseason. It shouldn’t take long for these teams to show they don’t like each other, especially if the game goes south quickly. Maybe these hefty fines will keep the players from fighting again, however.
