The Commanders need to figure this out before Week 1

The season hasn’t started yet, but the Washington Commanders are dealing with a major issue that needs to be resolved before Week 1.

The Commanders spent the offseason rebuilding their roster, but injuries in a certain position group might cause coach Dan Quinn to shuffle some players around. If players don’t sort through these injuries, the offensive line can go from a strength to an unstable part of the offense.

There are certainly reasons to be concerned

Quinn was asked by the media before practice on Monday if he was worried about not having the starting five up front available, and his response was, “Yeah, there’s concern”.

This is a major problem for protecting your franchise quarterback, Jayden Daniels, in 2025 when you don’t have the same guys up front all the time.

“What you’re missing when you’re not all the way together,” Quinn added. “Sometimes it’s the nonverbal cues that you’re just, you know, you’re working side by side with somebody. We’ve all been there. You just kind of step into a rhythm together. So you have to be really intentional about those communications.”

He has every right to say that, especially when you have so many new pieces and players moving to different positions on the offensive line. We haven’t seen the real starting five lineup together yet this offseason.

Sam Cosmi tore his ACL in January and is ahead of schedule, but we don’t know exactly when he will return and what that chemistry will look like on a new offensive line. Quinn said that a Week 1 return isn’t impossible for Cosmi, which would help tremendously.

New left guard Brandon Coleman also suffered an undisclosed injury last week at practice and didn’t travel with the team to New England. We haven’t received a recent update yet, but Quinn said he will discuss injuries further before practice on Tuesday. Coleman can’t afford to miss too much time with his move from tackle to guard, and missing out on building the connection with Laremy Tunsil and Tyler Biadasz can hurt long-term.

There can be an underlying positive

One thing that Quinn did bring up was how this also provides the opportunity to prepare for the worst, given the new norm in today’s NFL, with the increased number of games teams play now.

“Throughout a whole season, how many times has one line played the whole time?” Quinn said. “Not that often. Especially as the, you know, extended games. So going through ones like now and today, and where different people are in different voices, I don’t mind it. I’d welcome it, because it allows different chances.”

We saw Washington deal with injuries and rotations last season, and the team has done a great job adding valuable starters, which results in better depth to prepare for the worst. Still, you want to see the starting five eventually line up together and work on their communication to avoid any major bumps during the season.
