The Washington Commanders have spent another offseason rebuilding the roster and doing all they can to support QB Jayden Daniels, but questions still remain at certain positions that can be answered at training camp.

There's no doubt that the overall roster is much better after a second offseason with GM Adam Peters, and a lot of valuable positions have received major upgrades.

You can only do so much in a certain amount of time, and the Commanders still have some holes on the roster that can hinder the success of the season.

Questions still remain in the secondary

Washington has the strongest cornerback room it's had in a very long time, but the safety group lacks stability. Quan Martin is poised for a massive breakout season, but losing Jeremy Chinn in free agency could hurt the defense at first. Free agent safety Will Harris signed with Washington this offseason, and I honestly have no idea what to expect from him at strong safety.

Harris aligned at many positions in the Saints' secondary, so what does he look like at safety full time? Chinn was a tone setter with his run support and tackling, but Harris could add more value in pass coverage.

Depth is very weak as well with Percy Butler and Jeremy Reaves as the backups. Reaves is an All-Pro on special teams, but still unproven as a safety on defense. Butler is one of very few past-regime players left, and needs to step up massively to prove he belongs. Washington needs the safety room to step up and avoid giving up the big plays behind the defense, or it can cost them a few games this season.

The pace of opposing offenses depends on one position group

Last season we saw a slow bleeding on the defensive line due to to the inability to stop the run. Washington allowed 2,337 yards on the ground which finished 30th in the league, and that fell on the entire defensive line. Dante Fowler Jr. was a major liability in the run game, but blame could be spread to the inside of the defensive line as well.

We saw flashes of good moments from Daron Payne and rookie Johnny Newton last season, but both need to step up in big ways with Jonathan Allen no longer on the team.

Adding Javon Kinlaw and Deatrich Wise should honestly help the run defense a good bit, but we need to see it in action on the field. Washington's schedule is unforgiving with a lot of top running backs, and they can't allow the same results as last season.

Jayden Daniels can't be the only one

Having your rookie QB being your leading rusher on the team isn't ideal, even if he was historically good on the ground. Someone needs to step up and add consistency and reliability in the run game for the offense to be a balanced, well-oiled machine this season.

Washington dealt with a lot of injuries in the backfield last season with Brian Robinson Jr having multiple leg injuries, and Austin Ekeler dealing with concussions, which lead to a lack of confidence in the run game.

They added Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the seventh round of the draft, and he should provide a burst, and elusiveness that Washington doesn't have in the backfield right now. The biggest question is when will Croskey-Merritt earn those valuable snaps, and can he contribute on all three downs.

If Washington wants another playoff run that could lead to a Super Bowl appearance, these three position groups need to show up to training camp, and prove that the roster is good enough to win a championship.
