Under-the-radar free agent could fill Commanders’ biggest void if they miss on expensive swings
The Commanders can find production at a lower cost if they miss on top free agents by signing these under-the-radar players.
The Washington Commanders are poised to make big swings in free agency, but they aren’t guaranteed to land them all.
They’ve already been linked to top free agents such as Alec Pierce, Tyler Linderbaum, and others, but they need backup options who can still get the job done. The Commanders also have a lot of roster spots to fill, so don’t be surprised if they land a few of these free agents to take over bigger roles in their careers.
Arnold Ebiketie, EDGE
The Commanders’ biggest need this offseason is a true pass rusher, and they’ve brought back depth in Drake Jackson and Deatrich Wise. Now, the Commanders need a true pass rusher, and Arnold Ebiketie could be an answer. Ebiketie just turned 27, and he’s looking for a new team with a bigger role after the Atlanta Falcons drafted two pass rushers in the first round last season.
Ebiketie is explosive off the EDGE and has a great burst in pursuit. He fits the defense with his high motor and ability to play in odd-man fronts. Ebiketie is projected to make a two-year, $16 million contract in free agency, which is very reasonable for a high rotational player.
Jalen Nailor, WR
Jalen Nailor is a severely overlooked wide receiver in this free agency group, and he could be the Commanders’ answer in the slot. They’ll have plenty of outside WR options in Alec Pierce, Romeo Doubs, and Brandon Aiyuk once he’s released, but the slot WR options are very limited. Nailor was in an awful situation behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, with the QB play struggling all season.
Despite his situation, Nailor only had one drop on 49 targets, and averaged 15.3 yards per reception, which was seventh-highest in the NFL. Nailor is just turning 27 years old and could help the Commanders get younger and stretch the field. He’s expected to earn a one-year prove-it deal worth $4 million, and the Commanders need to be all over that if so.
Jalen Thompson, Safety
Jalen Thompson is one of my top underrated free agents this offseason, and he would fit Daronte Jones’ defensive scheme. He’s just 27 years old and plays fast and with a purpose. Thompson is also very versatile in the secondary with over 2,000 snaps in the box and at free safety, as well as over 1,000 snaps as a slot corner.
The Commanders’ current safety room isn’t good enough to play in Jones’ defense as it stands, and Thompson could be a great addition to the defense. They can still add another in free agency or the NFL Draft, and he’s projected to receive a two-year, $20 million contract this offseason.
