After a disappointing 2023 NFL season, the Washington Commanders are doing the expected.

No matter what happens in the Week 18 finale against the Dallas Cowboys, the Commanders are expected to move on from head coach Ron Rivera after four seasons according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport. Washington enters Sunday's tilt against Dallas with a 4-12 record, going 0-5 against NFC East opponents through 16 weeks of play.

According to Pelissero and Rapoport, new Commanders owner Josh Harris initially intended to let the season play out before making any decisions. However, with each passing week, the decision has become clear.

Rivera, 62, has been a head coach in the NFL since 2011, kicking things off with the Carolina Panthers. He faced several challenges during his tenure in Washington, including the COVID-19 pandemic, a cancer diagnosis, and the self-sabotage from former Washington owner Daniel Snyder. As of Sunday morning, his record with the Commanders is 26-39-1.

Harris has yet to put his mark on the team since acquiring it back in July. He's expected to evaluate the tenure of GM Martin Mayhew as well, who joined the franchise in 2020 alongside Rivera. Pelissero and Rapoport note that Senior VP of Football Strategy, Eugene Shen, will stay on in a leadership capacity.

Names like Jim Harbaugh, Bill Belichick, and others are already getting some play in the 2024 head-coaching circuit. Landing someone who could be a cornerstone for the franchise would certainly be a big win for Harris.
