Three of the seven NFL squads that needed a coach have indeed found one. Meanwhile, some teams have found new coordinators. Let’s take a look at the latest among the NFL’s coaching carousel.

Ben Johnson to Bears
: The former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, who was considered the top head coaching candidate on the market, has officially been swooped up by Chicago. The innovative coach has already spoken to the media and seems excited to work with quarterback Caleb Williams.

Aaron Glenn to Jets: The Lions lost their defensive coordinator as well, with Glenn headed to New York. With a defensive mind at the helm again, the next step for the Jets will be to select a good quality OC — here are a few options.

Liam Coen stays with Bucs: Speaking of OCs, Tampa Bay ended up keeping its guy despite Coen interviewing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bucs hooked up Coen with a contract extension that made him one of the highest-paid coordinators in the league.

Pats find their coordinators: New England’s new coach Mike Vrabel has been busy, finding new coordinators for both sides of the ball. The team hired Josh McDaniels, who was with the Patriots from 2001-08 and again in 2012-21, to run the offense, while former Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams will take over the team’s defense.: This was a matter of when rather than if, but Minnesota ended up with a multi-year extension.

Vikings extend Kevin O’Connell: This was a matter of when rather than if, but Minnesota ended up locking up coach Kevin O’Connell with a multi-year extension.

Bengals, Colts find DCs: The Bengals’ former DC, Lou Anarumo, found a new home as the Indianapolis Colts’ new DC. Meanwhile, Cincinnati replaced Anarumo with Al Golden, formerly the DC for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Golden has already begun building his defensive staff in Cincy with some new hires.

Raiders are still looking, but found a GM: Las Vegas wasn’t able to land Johnson to be HC, meaning its still on the lookout. However, Vegas has found a new general manager in Bucs assistant GM John Spytek.

Jags are still looking, and lost a GM: The Jaguars haven’t found a coach yet either, and are crumbling even further after ultimately deciding to fire GM Trent Baalke. It’s a puzzling decision considering Jacksonville potentially lost out on coaching candidates by deciding to keep Baalke all this time, so the team should probably have just led with parting with Baalke in the first place.

Saints still searching: New Orleans lost out on Glenn, but have interviewed several candidates with potentially more on the way.

Cowboys… What you doin’?
Not to pile on Dallas, but it seems like the team doesn’t really know what its doing in terms of its coaching search. Our guy Mauricio Rodriguez discussed this issue more in depth:

The Cowboys were the only team in the NFL to not request interviews with Johnson (now the Chicago Bears HC) or Glenn (now the Jets' coach), the top two candidates in the coaching market.

Six of the other six teams with head coaching vacancies interviewed at least one of them. Literally only Dallas passed on trying talking to them. Of the two teams that requested interviews with Glenn only, each has requested interviews with at least eight other candidates, including the Jets, who have requested interviews with 17 additional coaches.

But the Cowboys? They're sitting pretty at four. Of those four, two are familiar faces to the franchise: Kellen Moore (Cowboys OC from 2019-2022) and Brian Schottenheimer (Cowboys OC 2023-2024).

Here's the thing: This should be perceived as a decision of the utmost importance for the Cowboys. Choosing their future head coach should be considered a serious process. But so far, how can you take them seriously?

This is not what due diligence looks like. The other teams' processes prove that. Two true "outsiders" have been interviewed for the Cowboys job, neither of which are considered among the top head coaching candidates around the NFL (Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier).

Meanwhile, names such as Kliff Kingsbury, Todd Monken, Joe Brady, Brian Flores, Liam Coen, Pete Carroll, Steve Spagnuolo, and others are popping up on multiple teams' coaching searches.

Not in the Cowboys' though. You see, they do it differently in Dallas.

Nevermind it hasn't worked for almost three decades.
