We are officially at the midway point of the season after Monday night's snooze fest between the New York Jets and Los Angeles Chargers. This has been a pretty fun season so far and the playoff picture is becoming more and more clear with each passing week.
The race for the NFL's Most Valuable Player has a frontrunner, but we all know how quickly things can change. Several of the league's top players have put some impressive numbers, and wins, together over the course of their first eight or nine games of the year, which has several of them in contention at this point in the season.

Mahomes currently owns the third-best QBR (ESPN's metric, not the traditional QB rating) and he's fourth with 17 touchdown passes. He's coming off an impressive performance against the Miami Dolphins where he only threw for 186 yards, but threw two crucial touchdowns that helped the Kansas City Chiefs take the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
The Chiefs have a really good defense – an elite one, at that. However, it's clear they wouldn't be the top team in the AFC -and perhaps the NFL, even- without Mahomes.
He's not a lock to win MVP, though. Jalen Hurts isn't too far behind and one would be foolish to discount Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson. The former is finally healthy and has been on a tear, as the same for the latter, except he's been healthy. One could easily argue the Baltimore Ravens are currently the class of the AFC – that's how good they've been, lately.
And if there's a darkhorse/wild card, it's certainly Trevor Lawrence. He's really coming into his own and has a prime chance to show the NFL the Jacksonville Jaguars are for real when he and his teammates take on the San Francisco 49ers this week.
The back half of the season should be a fun one and it'll be interesting to see how these current rankings look by year's end.
