The Philadelphia Eagles lost much more than just a game in the team’s Christmas Eve showdown with the Dallas Cowboys.
Philadelphia fought hard, coming up just short in a 40-34 loss to Dallas. Though the loss doesn’t severely impact the Eagles’ chances to lock up the No. 1 seed in the NFC, injuries sustained in the contest will make life difficult for the Birds down the stretch.
On Monday, head coach Nick Sirianni revealed that right tackle Lane Johnson and slot cornerback Avonte Maddox are expected to miss time due to injury.
Johnson, who is tougher than a two-dollar steak, suffered an abdominal injury, which Sirianni revealed will keep him out for the remainder of the regular season. The team is hopeful to get Johnson back in the postseason, and the bye week would certainly help, but nothing is guaranteed at this point in time.
As for Maddox, his outlook for the rest of the year appears to be grim. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Maddox sustained a significant toe injury, which will sideline him indefinitely.
Following Maddox’s exit from Saturday’s game, the Cowboys immediately converted on a 3rd and 30, which was a quick reminder as to how important Maddox’s role is in this defense.
The Eagles are navigating through cluster injuries at positions of major importance. The next couple of weeks will be a litmus test as the team will find out which reserves can step up in critical moments.
