When Eagles legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins speaks, people listen.

Dawkins joined 94WIP’s Midday Show with Joe Giglio and former Eagle Hugh Douglas on Monday. The top of discussion centered around the vacant defensive coordinator position.

Philadelphia’s former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon bolted to take the Arizona Cardinals head coaching job after Super Bowl LVII. That leaves the Eagles in a bit of a scramble to find his replacement.

So far, the Eagles have interviewed former Wisconsin head coach Jim Leonhard.

The team is also reportedly interested in interviewing Seahawks associate head coach Sean Dessai along with former Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

Dawkins' Top Dog

When Dawkins was asked about his preference for the opening, he made his opinion clear.

“I would love it to be Vance [Joseph] because I know that he’s aggressive, I know that he’s elaborate, I know he blitzes, I know he mixes things up in different situations. So I would love that hire,” Dawkins said.

The interesting thing about Joseph is, like Dawkins stated, he has an affinity for blitzing. The Eagles have been in the NFL’s bottom five when it comes to blitz percentage since 2018. Joseph’s defenses have all ranked in the top five in the same category. In fact, the Cardinals had a 34.5 blitz percentage in 2022, which was good for second in the league.

Hiring Joseph would make for a major change in philosophy. That being said, the Eagles’ pass rush could take a hit this offseason with Javon Hargrave, Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox and Robert Quinn all set to hit free agency next month.

With the talent the Eagles have in their secondary, it isn’t far-fetched to believe Joseph could help keep the Birds amongst the NFL’s elite defenses. Joseph’s name is certainly one to keep an eye on as the interviewing process continues to unfold.
