The Philadelphia Eagles will be tasked with the challenge of replacing its offensive coordinator Shane Steichen after he was hired to be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

The news shouldn’t come as a surprise to Eagles fans. After all, Steichen was labeled as a frontrunner in Indy for quite some time. Philly’s 35-point output in Super Bowl LVII only strengthened his resume further.

Though Steichen will be missed in Philadelphia, there is no reason the Eagles’ offense should take a step back due to his departure.

Head coach Nick Sirianni runs the show when it comes to the Eagles’ offense. Steichen served as the offensive coordinator, but his role is most comparable to that of Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy. Neither Steichen or Bieniemy ever had total control over play calling.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts developed significantly under Steichen’s guidance. But continuity shouldn’t be a problem with Sirianni still at the helm. The Eagles are likely to replace Steichen with an in-house candidate, which should make the transition much smoother.

Quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson is the leader in the clubhouse to assume the role of offensive coordinator. Hurts has previously spoken highly of Johnson, who Hurts has referred to as a star.

Johnson has worked closely with Hurts since he was hired in 2021. In fact, Johnson and Hurts have a relationship that dates back to when Hurts was just four years old.

Johnson has never called plays in the NFL, but has served as an offensive coordinator in college during his stops with Utah, Houston and Florida.

The Eagles are one of the few teams in the NFL who won’t be enormously impacted by an offensive coordinator packing his bags and coaching elsewhere. There will be natural growing pains for whoever steps in, but Philadelphia has an embarrassment of riches on the offensive side of the ball to help ease Steichen’s successor along.
