The Philadelphia Eagles have officially placed starting nickel Avonte Maddox on injured reserve, NBC Sports' Dave Zangaro reported on Wednesday.
In two corresponding moves, the team signed wide receiver/punter return Britain Covey to their active roster and running back Bryant Koback to the practice squad.
Maddox sustained a potential season-ending pectoral injury during the Eagles’ Week 2 win over the Minnesota Vikings. He will have surgery this week and miss at least four games, but it sounds like it will be more.
Head coach Nick Sirianni told reports on Monday that they feel confident with their "in-house" players to step up in Maddox's place, however, they did sign cornerback depth on Tuesday in former Los Angeles Chargers defensive back Tiawan Mullen.
Covey takes Maddox's spot on the active roster. He has averaged 10.7 yards per punt return through two games so far, which is a better track record than last year's 9.3 average.
Koback worked out for the team on Tuesday. He went undrafted out of Toledo in 2022 and previously spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. As Kenneth Gainwell nurses a rib injury, Koback provides emergency depth in the backfield.
