For as much attention as the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense has been getting, it was the defense that stole the show in Sunday night’s 26-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
The Eagles picked off Cowboys QB Cooper Rush three times in the victory, and two of those were hauled in by C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
When you play for a gritty sports city like Philadelphia, fans expect players to reflect the city’s tough and hard-nosed qualities. That is CJGJ to a tee.
Garder-Johnson injured his hand by tackling Cowboys RB Tony Pollard early in the third quarter. The injury sidelined him temporarily before he ultimately made his return.
And what a return it was.
It was Gardner-Johnson who sealed the win with his second interception of the game, which occurred as the Cowboys were driving to cut into the deficit with just over five minutes remaining.
After the game, reporters questioned the Birds’ safety about his hand to which Gardner-Johnson replied, “I’m good. I play football. Soldier mentality.”
Gardner-Johnson, who starts at free safety, was acquired in a trade with the New Orleans Saints in late August. The Eagles received the 24-year-old safety and a 2025 seventh-round pick for a fifth-rounder in 2023 and two sixth-round selections in 2024.
Having played in just six games with the Eagles, a performance like this against a hated divisional rival in the Dallas Cowboys is enough to warrant his first game ball with his new team.
