Eagles, Giants, special teams

The Philadelphia Eagles have had a rollercoaster of a time in their special teams department this season.

It's crazy because the other two phases of this team are good as it gets. The offense is a top-three in the league, and the defense is easily top-five.

The offense can run the ball and throw it downfield. The defense can rush the passer, play it through the air, and as of late, have shown they can stop the best running backs.

One issue has been the special teams. Two weeks ago, the special teams were awful, as they had penalties left and right, and just weren't executing.

Then, last week against the Titans, they were amazing on special teams. There were some huge hits, and very few special teams penalties. Special teams ace Nakobe Dean gave nothing but praise to the group afterward.

“It was just attention to more detail,” Dean said. “We got back on the fundamentals. I wouldn’t say too much changed other than the passion and the energy towards special teams. The whole mindset of being out there kind of shifted in the unit. I feel like we play the best when we have that energy and passion going out there.

“I mean, we have one bad week and now we (special teams) are the worst in the league. I mean, come on now. We are just trying to be the best we can be. We are just trying to do our job.”

Against the Giants though, I don't really know if you can say bad or good. It has truly been a rollercoaster.

The Eagles hit on all of their kicks, so that wasn't really an issue. Of course, there was the huge kick return by Boston Scott that unfortunately only led to a field goal.

But, there were also some things that could make you think this was a bad unit. There was the blocked punt that could have ended in a touchdown because of them being in the back of the end zone. Fortunately, Siposs, the punter, recovered the ball and got it away from the goal line.

Either way, the Giants were still able to score off of that.

And outside of that one big return by Scott, the punt and kick coverage on the returns has not been great. Not to mention, the gunners aren't getting down there quickly either.

This unit for the Eagles has been a rollercoaster, and hopefully, we see it change. I mean, heck, Jake Elliot is out here punting after Siposs left with an injury. That's how crazy things are getting.
