Moments after he was drafted, Eagles fans immediately questioned the team’s decision to select center Cam Jurgens with the 51st overall pick.
Many thought finding Jason Kelce’s successor could have waited a couple of rounds, or even another year. But tune quickly changed in Philadelphia as the Wisconsin product is putting together a marvelous training camp.
Jurgens was recently named in a list compiled by Pro Football Focus detailing which players’ stocks are rising after two weeks of preseason football. PFF writer Sam Monson had the following to say about the impressive rookie.
“Jurgens was on the receiving end of a dominant Jordan Davis rep in practice that went viral, but he showed in the preseason that he’s an excellent prospect in his own right. Against Cleveland, Jurgens had his second strong showing, earning PFF grades of at least 77.8 in each facet of play. He didn’t allow any pressure across his 12 pass-blocking snaps and was excellent as a run blocker, serving up pancakes at the second level like he works at a breakfast diner.”
Jurgens posted the second-highest PFF grade (85.2) amongst centers in the Eagles’ 21-20 victory over the Browns.
Though he could start for a handful of teams around the league, Jurgens finds himself in a fantastic spot in Philly. He will be afforded the luxury of learning behind Kelce, who is a four-time All-Pro with five Pro Bowl appearances under his belt in his 11-year career.
Center is a crucial piece to any offense in the NFL. Early returns on Jurgens suggest the Eagles, who have endured two decades of reliable center play, will be set at the position for the foreseeable future.
