They are often not thought about until they are needed: the backup quarterbacks.

And of late, the Philadelphia Eagles are in the market for a new one. Gardner Minshew was the backup last season, and he'll be a free agent once the new league year officially begins on March 15. Minshew was a solid backup for the Eagles over the past two seasons and recently has been linked to the Carolina Panthers.

So, who should the Eagles replace Minshew with? The answer is clear, Tennessee's Hendon Hooker.

People look at the politics of drafting a quarterback through the wrong lens. Often everyone assumes that the drafted quarterback is there to take the starter's job. That is not the case with Hooker.

He was a Heisman candidate for most of the 2022 college football season before tearing his ACL near the end of Tennessee's historic season.

Drafting Hooker would give the Eagles a quarterback with a similar skillset to Jalen Hurts. And often what teams are looking for in a backup quarterback is a sense of continuity in offensive style. Hooker as a backup gives Philadelphia that possibility.

Additionally, Hooker is just an easy guy to root for. He transferred out of Virginia Tech to play for the Volunteers and was a Heisman candidate in his last year of college. Does that not sound familiar?

It's the same story as Hurts.

When looking at backup quarterback options, Hooker simply makes the most sense.
