The sky is seemingly falling in Pittsburgh after back-to-back tumultuous losses.
Pittsburgh's problems stem far beyond the product on the field at this point, with multiple leaders saying it's time to change things up.
Star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is the latest leader to do so, and he may have had the strongest sentiment yet:
"In order to see fruit, you gotta toil for it," Fitzpatrick told the media after the game. "I think too many people don’t want to toil for it. They just want to walk out here and think they’re gonna make plays and think they’re gonna perform at the high level. Dudes think that just because they’re wearing the Black and Gold they're going to win games. And I think we need to check that mentality and make people realize they have to earn that mentality.”
I for one have never toiled for my fruit, but in all seriousness, Fitzpatrick is dead right here. The sense I gather from covering the team, watching the games, and talking to sources close to the situation, is that Pittsburgh has a "Me" problem.
Sure it's been highlighted "In stadium" with the George Pickens antics or the Diontae Johnson effort, but that's just what we, and even I are privy to.
Many thought that when Najee Harris addressed the media just days before Matt Canada's firing, his statement: "If only yall saw what goes on around here," was a shot at Canada.
But it wasn't.
It was a shot at Pittsburgh's culture, at their mentality, as Fitzpatrick pointed out.
And like every business…Culture, team-building, and accountability start at the top with ownership, management, and coaching.
Pittsburgh has excelled in all three for some time, hanging Super Bowl banners on the backs of the Steelers mindset.
But that mentality has evaporated in Pittsburgh, and you shouldn't need Fitzpatrick to tell you that. The only way Pittsburgh gets it back may be rebuilding from the ground up.
