Safety Tyrann Mathieu is the top free agent still available and the Pittsburgh Steelers have interest in signing him.

The Steelers are holding off on signing a safety until they know what Mathieu is going to do.

Mark Kaboly, who covers the Steelers for The Athletic, said this week that he believes Pittsburgh is holding off on re-signing safety Terrell Edmunds because of Mathieu.

From The Athletic:

I don’t think it is money right now. I think it is waiting to see what Tyrann Mathieu decides to do. The last thing you want to do is sign Edmunds then have to tell the Honey Badger no thanks. Now, I am not criticizing Edmunds. I think he has continued to get better, but we are talking about a different level with Mathieu.

This appears to be a situation where the Steelers aren't willing to hand Mathieu a huge contract. They want him, but they're waiting to see if his price falls to a more manageable number.

Other teams, however, are also heavily interested in the Honey Badger.

Mathieu visited the New Orleans Saints earlier this week. And on Thursday, Mathieu had a Zoom visit with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mathieu reportedly isn't in a hurry to sign.

Mathieu obviously wants to get paid, but he's also looking for a situation where he can win. The Saints aren't in a great spot right now. The Eagles and the Steelers are in similar situations — neither team is the favorite in their division, but both are capable of winning their division.

The longer this goes, the better shot I think the Steelers have to land the former LSU star. Though if Pittsburgh waits too long, they risk missing out on both Mathieu and Edmunds.
