The Pittsburgh Steelers have now wrapped up the offseason. The next time they are in the grass in Latrobe, it will be training camp.
So, with that in mind, today we're going to preview the 53 players that will make it out of camp and onto the active roster come September when the roster is lowered from the 90 current players.
Note: Players with single asterisk (*) are 2023 draft picks and players with double asterisks (**) are 2023 undrafted free agents.
Quarterback (3)
IN: Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph
OUT: Tanner Morgan**
The skinny: Kenny Pickett has been solid to start camp as has Mitch Trubisky. Mason Rudolph has dominated third-team reps even if Tanner Morgan has looked good in what little burn he's received.
In the end, Rudolph's experience will be too much and I expect he holds off Morgan, creating a replica of last year's quarterback room.
Running back (4)
IN: Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, Anthony McFarland Jr, Connor Heyward
OUT: Greg Bell, John Lovett, Darius Hagans**
The skinny: I have Heyward with this group because I believe he will double as a fullback and tight end, making him an easier choice to keep on the roster as the 4th back. The Steelers have experimented with Heyward at both positions this offseason, something you can expect to continue leading into the start of the season.
Wide receiver (6)
IN: Diontae Johnson, George Pickens, Allen Robinson II, Calvin Austin, Miles Boykin, Hakeem Butler
OUT: Ja'Marcus Bradley, Jordan Byrd**, Dan Chisena, Dez Fitzpatrick, Cody White, Gunner Olszewski, Anthony Miller
The Skinny: Pittsburgh has their top three solidified in Johnson, Pickens, and Robinson, with Calvin Austin III slated to make his NFL debut after missing all of his rookie season. Behind them, I chose Boykin as a core special teamer and Hakeem Butler as a wildcard who has a skillset none of the players on the outs do.
Tight end (3)
IN: Pat Friermuth, Darnell Washington*, Zach Gentry
OUT: Rodney Williams
The skinny: This group could present some ominous three tight end sets for Pittsburgh and since I choose to put Connor Heyward with the fullbacks, the number of tight ends I have making the roster is three but things could look a little different depending on how the team officially lists Heyward.
Offensive line (10)
IN: Broderick Jones, Isaac Seumalo, Mason Cole, James Daniels, Chukwuma Okorafor, Dan Moore Jr., Kevin Dotson, Nate Herbig, Le'Raven Clark, Kendrick Green
OUT: Spencer Anderson*, Trevor Downing** William Dunkle, Ryan McCollum Jarrid Williams
The skinny: After adding plenty of guards in free agency, if the Steelers really feel they need another center on the roster then I could see either McCollum returning or Anderson making the roster, but I think Green is capable of being the backup there. There weren't a ton of changes to the group following the draft, with Jarrid Williams as the only addition. He could battle Le'Raven Clark for a backup tackle spot but I have Clark winning as of now.

Defensive line (6)
IN: Cameron Heyward, Keeanu Benton*, Larry Ogunjobi, Breiden Fehoko, DeMarvin Leal, Isaiahh Loudermilk
OUT: Montavius Adams, Armon Watts, Johnathan Marshall, James Nyamwaya** Manny Jones
The skinny: With the addition of Benton and re-signing of Ogunjobi, the line is in good shape and will no longer need the services of Watts and Adams, with solid depth in Fehoko, Leal, and Loudermilk. Renell Wren was replaced by Manny Jones following the injury that placed him on IR, but it will be an uphill battle for him to make the roster.
Outside linebacker (4)
IN: T.J Watt, Alex Highsmith, Markus Golden, Nick Herbig*
OUT: David Perales** Chapelle Russel, Quincy Roche, Toby Ndukwe**
The skinny: The Steelers' edge position suddenly looks much better than it did even after the draft, thanks to the signing of veteran sack artist Markus Golden. He will provide immediate veteran depth and situational pass rush, something the group was lacking before his acquisition.
Inside linebacker (4)
IN: Cole Holcomb, Elandon Roberts, Mark Robinson, Kwon Alexander
OUT:
The skinny: The Steelers parted ways with Tae Crowder during OTAs meaning I expect all four of the inside backers currently on the roster to make the team. This is where the concerns arise though as I'm not exactly confident in this group's coverage ability, even if Keanu Neal doubles as a safety and inside backer.
Cornerback (6)
IN: Patrick Peterson, Joey Porter Jr.* Levi Wallace, Cory Trice Jr.* James Pierre, Chandon Sullivan
OUT: Duke Dawson, Madre Harper, Chris Wilcox, Luq Barcoo,
The skinny: When doing the way too early roster projection after the draft, I thought Sullivan and Pierre would be on the outs but then the Steelers decided to release Arthur Maulet and Ahkello Witherspoon. It was a clear signal to get longer, younger, and faster, meaning I would expect the group to turn out similar to this one.
Safety (4)
IN: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Damontae Kazee, Keanu Neal, Tre Norwood
OUT: Miles Killebrew, Scott Nelson, Elijah Riley, Kenny Robinson
The skinny: The late addition of Neal in free agency will likely slide Killebrew out as he offers more versatility and may play the linebacker-safety hybrid that he shined at during his early years in Atlanta. Kazee and Neal have taken snaps at the strong safety position over the spring and it will be a real camp battle to see who comes away with the top spot.
Special Teams (3)
IN: Chris Boswell, Pressley Harvin, Christian Kuntz
OUT: Braden Mann, BT Potter**
The skinny: I believe the Steelers brought Mann in to "push" Harvin if you will, as the former Ray Guy winner for best punter in the country while at Georgia Tech has struggled to carry over his success to the league. Potter is likely a camp leg and could gain a role elsewhere.
