All eyes will be on Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin this offseason and his offensive coordinator decision.
Will Tomlin fire Matt Canada, a move that fans have been begging for all season?
Or will Tomlin retain Canada after the Steelers' strong finish to the season?
It's starting to feel like it's going to be the latter option.
First, there were the comments from Pittsburgh running back Najee Harris where the former Alabama star defended Canada.
“I can’t control none of that, so I’m not really gonna answer that … but we all believe in Canada,” said Harris after the Steelers' win against the Browns (via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor). “Everybody’s saying he called the same plays, but everybody calls the same plays. You can look at everybody everywhere. Everybody calls the same plays.”
“All that play-calling stuff, I think that’s just a coverup for just the lack of stuff that we were doing on the field as players,” added Harris. “I never bought into none of that… cause I know at the end of the day, we’re the ones who gotta make the plays.”
Now we have some comments from Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger praising Canada.
Roethlisberger recently said on his podcast that he thought Canada did great down the stretch this season.
It feels like the Steelers are thinking about keeping Canada and they're putting a nice PR spin on the situation to change the perception of the beleaguered offensive coordinator.
One piece of evidence that supports this is that we've already seen numerous offensive coordinators fired this week, but Canada is still employed.
The Tennessee Titans and the Washington Commanders have fired their offensive coordinators. The New York Jets also might have fired their offensive coordinator (that's a weird situation right now).
If it was a no-brainer that Tomlin was going to fire Canada, it would've been done by now. So I think the timing tells us that Tomlin is strongly considering keeping Canada.
And I think the comments from Harris and Big Ben show us that Pittsburgh is trying to change the public opinion of Canada (good luck with that).
We'll see how this transpires in the coming days, but I think Steelers fans should warm up the possibility of Canada calling plays again next season.
