If you were around back in early August, then you remember the fodder surrounding the chemistry between Kenny Pickett and George Pickens.
Seemingly creating a splash play every other day against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense during camp, the two look poised for a huge year.
Well, despite their offensive woes, these two have chemistry on one pass that is becoming virtually unstoppable:
Back-Shoulder Bandits
That's right the back shoulder pass.
It has become a staple, a go-to, maybe even a crutch, but it works and it works often:
Now, some will say that it isn't sustainable, and it isn't an efficient offensive playcall.
Well, I tend to agree with the latter, as it can probably be labeled as a "bail-out" throw for Kenny.
But when you have the catch radius that George Pickens has, it will always be sustainable, especially with Kenny continuing to demonstrate the appropriate ball location on the pass.
It seems some players don't view it the same way, however:
"Because back shoulder fades, listen, they're working. It's getting 130 yards. But, what are we talking about," said former Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger on his podcast Footbahlin after the Ravens game. "To me, a back shoulder fade is.. you're, most of the time you're trying to throw the fade over the top. But that's how I would tell guys I expect the ball over the top, and then react to the back shoulder. You rarely ever say when a receiver runs a go route, you're not calling like, 'Okay, back shoulder fade."
And there is definitely some truth to that. No one is going into offensive team meetings and designing back-shoulder fades. That's just not how offensive game planning in the NFL works.
But Big Ben knows better than anyone when it comes to making plays off schedule, drawing calls up in the dirt, and just playing backyard ball.
So deep down, I'm sure a part of him agrees that it's not broke, so why fix it.
