Steelers: Mike Tomlin addresses his future in Pittsburgh, upcoming contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for their continuity.

Whether it be the coaching staff, the general manager, or the quarterback, Pittsburgh likes to keep things even-keeled.

But following some comments from yesterday, Steelers fans may be in for a rude awakening:

Mike Tomlin may be trying to win a Super Bowl in the present, but that doesn't mean his future isn't on his mind, or at least on the mind of reporters:

"This is the time when this organization has extended their contract with the head coach; that would be for you. Do you expect that? Would that mean something," asked a reporter at yesterday's presser.

"Wow, I hadn't even thought about it," answered Tomlin. "I'm at a stage of my career where I don't care about contracts to be honest with you, man. I acknowledge I've seen more days than I'm going to see. You know, that's just the nature of this thing. I'm appreciative of the opportunity. I'm singularly focused. I'm thankful that I'm at a stage in life and my career where that's a non-issue for me."

The Steelers and Mike Tomlin have been one and the same for nearly two decades at this point, with Coach T viewed as a staple in the franchise. And whether it's organizational pressure or his own choice, Tomlin's time in Pittsburgh is closer to the end than it is to the beginning.

Now, the majority of Steelers fans hope that day is still a ways away, but his self-admitted comments are telling, and foreshadowing a future that is scary at the least, but intolerable at the worst.

That's because the coaching carousel that plagues most of the NFL's franchises is foreign to Steelers fans. Whoever replaces Tomlin, and whenever they do, they will have arguably the biggest shoes in the league to fill, given his accolades and accomplishments

So maybe Coach T was just being sentimental. We know he practices perspective in every situation he encounters, so the opening of another camp, and the start of another season surely means a great deal to him.

But Steelers fans had better hope that it was just a mere reflection, with his actual departure still a ways away.
