Broderick Jones has had a terrific final stretch of training camp for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
That being said, he's still behind when it comes to the race for starting left tackle.
However, he sees an advantage in not being the starter right away:
Jones: "I like to Feel Things Out"
"I actually like the competition. I'm really not that big on just coming in and just jumping in with the ones," said Jones on how he feels about not starting yet. "You know, I like to feel things out. I feel like it's an asset for me just to sit back and watch somebody who's done it for years. So, just being able to watch what works and what doesn't, track those small things, it's a blessing."
That's a unique point of view from the rookie, especially when you consider his draft status and time at Georgia. This was a highly rated HS prospect, back-to-back national champion, and top 15 selection in the NFL Draft.
Yet he is humble enough to ask questions and learn from the man he was drafted to replace, displaying the exact attitude that teams covet from all their players. And who's going to argue with his process, it's seemingly working thus far:
A strong preseason debut followed up by a stellar few days at practice, and Jones is suddenly creeping into poll position when it comes to who's protecting Kenny Pickett's blindside starting in September.
And while the rookie still has a way to go in terms of his game, they are minor technical deficiencies, something I know Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Pat Meyer is crafting every day in meetings and practice.
With two days of camp left, followed by two preseason games, Jones has ample opportunities to prove his learning process has worked, with all eyes set on week one.
