A busy day on the southside, the Pittsburgh Steelers hosted four considerable draft prospects on Tuesday.
Per Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the team met with FSU DT Braden Fiske, WKU WR Malachi Corley, and DBs Andru Phillips & Daequan Hardy of Kentucky and Penn State respectively:
Braden Fiske
An explosive DT who likes to get north and rush upfield, when I say Fiske is Pittsburgh's type of defensive lineman, I cannot emphasize that enough.
He's a tad small for what they prefer along the interior at 6'3 and sub 300 pounds, but his elite athleticism is exactly what Pittsburgh covets along their interior defenders.
Not only does his 12 sacks over the past two seasons prove how valuable he can be as an interior pass rusher, but his testing numbers mimic a former Pitt Panther and recently retired NFL legend whom I will not name because it's unfair to compare the two:
Currently situated at 45 on the consensus big board, Pittsburgh has far more pressing needs than more defensive linemen, but many teams, (including Pittsburgh) believe in building strength on strength, making Fiske a viable option at 51.
Andru Phillips
While at the Senior Bowl in Mobile back in February, the corner that generated all the headlines was Quinyon Mitchell, who is likely to be the first corner or even defender off the board and is likely a top 15 pick.
But Phillips was the under-the-radar performer that turned heads, even locking down top-performing WRs like Roman Wilson and Ladd McConkey:
Currently 89th on the consensus board, Phillips would be well within striking range of the Steelers' 84th overall pick. But he's a rising candidate in the draft class and for good reason.
Malachi Corley
Corley is easily one of the more unique players at the position.
Some in the NFL have compared his skill set to that of 49ers star Deebo Samuel. I personally believe that’s a little rich, but Corley plays with the aggression and physicality of a running back while lining up at WR.
Pittsburgh doesn’t typically involve themselves with “Swiss Army Knife’s” on offense, as they tend to draft offensive skill players with defined roles and traits to match.
However, Corley could be a part of the reinvigorated, and reimagined offense under new OC Arthur Smith, but it would likely come in round two given Corley's 64th overall ranking on the consensus board.
Daequan Hardy
Hardy is likely to be a late day-three pick or college-free agent, but Pittsburgh likes to keep tabs on Penn State Nittany Lions, plus Hardy has the versatility to be a DB and returner if needed.
