The Pittsburgh Steelers aimed to revamp the cornerback position this offseason, adding veteran depth and youthful vigor.
They did so when they signed names like Patrick Peterson in free agency and drafted others such as Joey Porter Jr. and Cory Trice Jr.
That signaled that there would be obvious replacements in the corner room, and as of today, we now have one.
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Steelers have informed cornerback Arthur Maulet that he will be released.
Maulet played the last two seasons in Pittsburgh, coming off a career year in 2022 where he saw highs in interceptions (1), sacks (2), and tackles (59). The 29-year-old corner will only save $1 million dollars against the cap, signaling a change of direction at the position.
This move seemed imminent when the Steelers added Chandon Sullivan late in free agency and drafted two corners. The room was overflowing (and still is) with talent and Maulet caught the short straw, unfortunately.
A pesky run defender and versatile defender, Maulet will likely land on his feet, as you should expect him to find work elsewhere. For now, Steelers nation can thank him for his services, and acknowledge the start of a new era.
