Team building is a fine balance of weighing what has happened with what will happen.

For the Pittsburgh Steelers, WR Diontae Johnson has been an excellent player, but with the final year of his deal approaching, the team knew getting something for his services was better than just letting him walk.

And they have done just that, as per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Diontae Johnson is headed to the Carolina Panthers:

The trade will net the Steelers CB Donte Jackson and pick 178 in the upcoming draft in exchange for Johnson and pick 240, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.

Johnson was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Toldeo. Labeled as undersized and not explosive, his draft value mirrored where Pittsburgh would select him.

But as we know about the Steelers, their eye for talent at the WR position is unparalleled across the league, and Johnson would prove as much, earning Pro Bowl honors and allocating 391 catches for 4,363 yards and 25 TDs over his five-year career in Pittsburgh.

One of the best route runners in the league, Johnson will only be 28 when the 2024 NFL season starts, and his playstyle lends to him being a suitable option well into his 30s since his game has never been built on explosion.

But Pittsburgh was never going to extend Johnson twice and they will look to draft his replacement as early as April's draft, with the hope that pairing George Pickens with another elite WR forms an unguardable duo for years to come.
