One of the most intriguing parts of training camp every year are the tails of who makes the roster.
Often late-round picks or UDFAs, these success stories become part of what makes football so special.
But to earn a spot means one has to be taken away, with these three Pittsburgh Steelers on the bubble heading into camp.
WR Calvin Austin III
Perhaps no one on the Steelers needs a bigger camp than Calvin Austin III. After missing his rookie year with a foot injury, and losing the slot WR battle to Allen Robinson last year, Calvin Austin III now has to battle multiple players (many of whom have similar skill sets) for his spot.
That's not to say he can't or won't win a spot, as some believe he can even be a breakout candidate, but the depth chart is steep at WR and Austin will have to prove why Pittsburgh made the decision to draft him.
OT Dan Moore Jr.
No one will be more polarizing at training camp than Dan Moore. If you told me he had a good camp and was starting come Week 1, I would believe it. If you told me he lost the OT battle to Troy Fautanu or Broderick Jones and was the Steelers' swing tackle, I would believe it.
And if you told me that he was either traded or released following camp because the team is comfortable with the rookie class and other veteran backups, I would also believe that.
So, Moore has his work cut out for him as only one of those three scenarios has a result that he would view as desirable. Often overly criticized, if and when Moore leaves Pittsburgh, he will have plenty of suitors.
LB Mark Robinson
Similar to Calvin Austin III, Robinson is all of a sudden in a crowded room, except unlike the group of WRs, the hierarchy is already sorted in the LB corps. Patrick Queen and Elandon Roberts will start, with Cole Holcomb and rookie Payton Wilson looking to mix in once healthy (in the case of Holcomb) and ready (in the case of Wilson).
So Robinson needs a big camp just to hold down his special teams spot. His usage down the stretch last season when the LB corps was plagued with injury showed some promise, but you also saw a player who just converted from RB to LB a few years ago.
We'll see if that changes in Latrobe.
