The San Francisco 49ers' pass rush has endured some significant struggles this season, but they have made a big move to give it some juice by trading for former second overall pick Chase Young.

Per multiple reports, the 49ers have sent a third-round pick to the Washington Commanders in exchange for the 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year. The trade is subject to a physical.

Young will team up with his former Ohio State teammate Nick Bosa, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, re-establishing a fearsome edge rusher tandem.

Bosa has only three sacks this season, but is third among all edge rushers with 44 pressures, per Pro Football Focus.

Young, finally healthy again after seeing successive seasons derailed by injury, has 38, tallying five sacks and nine quarterback hits.

Still only 24, Young will surely be viewed as a long-term investment by the 49ers, who will need to sign him to an extension if they wish to keep him around beyond the end of this season. Young is a free agent next offseason.

For now, though, he brings significant assistance to a pass rush enduring unexpected adversity. The 49ers, despite ranking ninth in pressure rate, per Pro Football Reference, have only registered 18 sacks this season.

Converting pressures into sacks has been a huge problem. The 49ers did not sack Kirk Cousins once in their Monday Night Football loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7. They did manage three in Week 8 but were continually frustrated by Joe Burrow as they slipped to a third straight defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 49ers face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10 in what could be Young's debut. The Jaguars made a trade of their own on deadline day, landing Vikings guard Ezra Cleveland to improve their offensive line ahead of that matchup with an even more stacked pass rush.
