Brock Purdy has an immediate chance to grow his legend when he leads the 49ers' offense in their season opener with the Steelers.

Purdy technically tasted defeat as a starter in the playoffs when he tore an elbow ligament in the NFC Championship Game against the Eagles.

But he has yet to be on the losing side with the Niners in the regular season and his talismanic performances in putting together a five-game win streak as a starter have put him on the verge of making NFL history in Pittsburgh.

Purdy won each of his first five starts while throwing at least two touchdown passes in every game. He became the third rookie to win his first five starts and, if he prevails again on Sunday while throwing a pair of touchdowns, he will take his place in the record books as the only quarterback to win his first six starts while passing for two touchdowns.

Having posted a passer rating of at least 95 in each of his opening five starts, Purdy can also become the first quarterback to post a rating of 95 or above in his first six starts with a similarly strong performance against Pittsburgh.

His rapid ascension having begun with successful relief effort against the Dolphins when he entered the in place of an injured Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy has a chance to join Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia as the fourth 49ers quarterback since the merger to throw at least two touchdowns in seven successive games.

Garcia owns the longest such 49ers streak in that time, having thrown for two scores in eight consecutive games between Week 4 and Week 12 of the 2001 season. The Niners lost only one of those games.

Purdy still has a long way to go to prove to those outside of the 49ers facility that he can be the guy at quarterback, and adding to his resume by achieving NFL first will certainly do his burgeoning reputation no harm.
