It's easy to see why Brock Purdy is so well liked in the San Francisco 49ers' locker room.

San Francisco's star quarterback was on hand at Maples Pavilion at Stanford University on Sunday to watch his alma mater, Iowa State, face the Cardinal in the second round of women's NCAA tournament.

The Cyclones suffered disappointment, losing 87-81 in overtime.

Despite the loss, Purdy, having suffered an overtime defeat in the biggest game of his life last month, was keen to ensure the Iowa State players kept their heads held high after coming up short against second seed Stanford.

Purdy visited the locker room after the game, and delivered an inspirational message to the team.

"All you guys are some freaking ballers," Purdy said. "I hope you guys know the standard is high here. The standard is high. You guys have laid a foundation. You guys have had a foundation with Coach [Bill] Fennelly. And what you guys continue to do and allow the younger guys to come in and keep it up, that's all you guys.

"So heads freaking high as you walk out because you guys put it all out there. That's all I got to say. I love you guys, what you guys stand for, and I'm so proud to be a Cyclone and watch because what an honor. So heads up, freaking champions, in my eyes. Love you girls."

Purdy divided opinion as a quarterback last season despite putting together an MVP resume in putting the 49ers within one play of Super Bowl glory. But there is no doubt he continues to be an excellent leader and role model both on the field and away from football. He showed that again in helping Iowa State deal with the pain of defeat.
