The San Francisco 49ers might have had lingering concerns about Chase Young passing his physical following their blockbuster trade for the edge rusher on Tuesday.
They did not have to worry. Young's trade became official on Wednesday, with the 49ers announcing he had passed his physical.
Young now joins a star-studded defensive line that has failed to live up to expectations so far this season, tallying just 18 sacks through the first eight games, with a failure to get home on pressures a key issue in San Francisco's three-game losing streak, which has dropped them to 5-3.
The 2020 second overall pick has 38 pressures on the season, per Pro Football Focus, along with five sacks and nine quarterback hits.
General manager John Lynch was asked on Wednesday about any health concerns surrounding Young, who suffered a torn ACL and patellar tendon in the 2021 season and had to undergo an ACL reconstruction. He did not return until Week 16 of last season, in a game against the 49ers.
Lynch told a conference call on Wednesday:
"I kept turning on the tape and you know, like 75, 64, those are a lot of snaps. And so, I think the proof is in what's translating on the field. He's been playing a lot and looking really good. So, there's preliminary medical stuff where they send medical files and all that and then the last step is him flying out here today and doing the actual physical. So, we hope that all goes well, but it sure looks like he's been healthy based upon what he's been doing on the field."
Now the physical has all gone to plan as Lynch hoped, Young can focus on continuing a bounce-back season with his new team as they look to get back to winning ways and plot a course towards the Super Bowl.
49ers still have massive haul of 2024 draft picks after Chase Young trade
They have a lot of resources left.
