Though the San Francisco 49ers' running game has struggled in recent games, Christian McCaffrey has continued to find the endzone with history-making consistency.
The do-it-all running back's two-touchdown effort against the Cincinnati Bengals before the bye saw him equal the all-time record for consecutive games (regular and postseason) with a touchdown.
He shares the record with Lenny Moore having found the endzone in 17 straight games. A score against the Jaguars would see McCaffrey take outright possession of the record.
As he was after his first touchdown versus Cincinnati, McCaffrey will likely be keen to hang on to the game ball should he indeed break the record.
Yet he probably won't have a choice. The custom in such instances is for an NFL official to quickly take possession of the ball for it to be placed in the Hall of Fame. The smart money says that will happen if McCaffrey does take his season total to 14 in Jacksonville.
It might not be the last time McCaffrey makes history this season. With a touchdown against Jacksonville, he will join Moore and LaDainian Tomlinson as only the third player to score in 15 successive regular-season games. The record of 18 is shared by Moore and Tomlinson, and it's one McCaffrey will have in his sights as he looks to inspire the 5-3 Niners to a second-half surge.
McCaffrey has scored 23 touchdowns from scrimmage in 19 regular-season games for the 49ers since his trade from the Carolina Panthers last year. One on Sunday would see him tie Gale Sayers (Bears) for the third-most by a player in his first 20 games with a team. Two more would move him level with Randy Moss (Patriots) and his second four-touchdown performance of the campaign would tie the record of 27 owned by Jim Brown (27).
If he does the latter, the 49ers will almost certainly be celebrating a long-awaited victory.
Weather forecast: Chance of showers in 49ers-Jaguars
The Niners will hope it stays dry.
