Brock Purdy has been near faultless through the first four weeks of the 2023 season, but the Cowboys' defense represents the biggest challenge of the campaign so far for the 49ers' starting quarterback in their huge Sunday Night Football matchup.

Purdy leads the NFL with a quarterback rating of 115.1 and has completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 1,019 yards, five touchdowns and zero interceptions in 2023.

Dallas' defense poses a huge threat to an interception-less streak that stretches back to Week 17 of last season. The Cowboys rank second in total takeaways with 10 and forced three in their 38-3 rout of the Patriots last week.

Purdy has been successful in large part because of his proficiency in getting the ball out quickly and delivering decisively. Per NextGen Stats, Purdy ranks seventh with an average time to throw of 2.56 seconds.

However, as head coach Kyle Shanahan identified in his Wednesday press conference, the Cowboys have the kind of defensive front that can speed up even a quarterback who has emerged as one of the NFL's faster processors at this early point in his career.

Asked what was special about what the Dallas defense did against New England, Shanahan replied:

"The same thing that they do to a lot of guys. When you get into some bad situations and stuff, that the D-Line is tough to handle and they can make you make a lot of mistakes. You've got to get rid of it quick sometimes, not always before you're ready. They mix up a lot of man coverages, a lot of zone coverages and they can confuse you with that. When you're behind the chains and things like that, not just Sunday, but really for the last three years they're as good as team as any when they got you one dimensional and creating turnovers and getting after the quarterback."

Dallas, with its defensive front led by Micah Parsons but also featuring Demarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong and Sam Williams in its edge rotation as well as an emerging force at defensive tackle in Osa Odighizuwa, is arguably the team that has made Purdy look most uncomfortable during his short time as an NFL starter.

Purdy was still able to help the 49ers beat the Cowboys 19-12 in the Divisional Round of last season's playoffs. However, the test they provide has arguably only gotten greater. Dallas is second in the NFL in sack rate (10.4%) and first in Expected Points Added per pass attempt, per Sumer Sports.

In short, theirs is a defense with the talent up front to hurry Purdy into bad decisions that risk turnover-worthy throws and limit the efficiency of an offense that is second in EPA per play this season. No defense to this point has presented such problems on a consistent level.

Similarly tough examinations of Purdy and the 2023 49ers vintage will follow in the second half of the season. Right now, though, a meeting with the Cowboys defense is the acid test, and there will be a lot more people tipping the Niners for Super Bowl glory should their signal-caller pass it with flying colors.
