Deebo Samuel has been in a lot of pain with the shoulder injury he suffered in the San Francisco 49ers' Week 6 loss to the Cleveland Browns, but he clearly won't let anything deter him from being ready to help them bounce back on Monday Night Football.
Samuel left the Niners' first loss of the season in the first quarter with an injury he said he sustained while running a jet sweep on the first play of the game.
Running back Christian McCaffrey (rib/oblique) joined him in leaving the contest in the second half, while All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams battled through an ankle injury while blocking one of the premier pass rushers in the game in Myles Garrett.
Samuel and Williams are considered day to day, while McCaffrey's problem is said to be a pain tolerance issue. It is reported all three have a chance to play in primetime when the 5-1 Niners face the 2-4 Vikings on the road.
Asked about his hopes of playing, Samuel — who likened his injury to a stinger — told 'Up and Adams': "Right now it’s a little sore, well actually a lot of sore, like day to day. It actually happened the first play of the game, he kind of like caught me in the bicep. I never had a stinger before so I never knew like what it felt like. It kind of went numb for a little minute and then I got all my feeling back and I was in too much pain to go back out.
"We’re going to do everything possible to get ready for Monday and just see how it goes during the week. From Sunday to now, it’s way much better than what it was."
Without Samuel and McCaffrey, the 49ers' attack was shorn of its two most versatile weapons and the impact was clear as the Browns defense dominated the second half, though only a missed game-winning field goal attempt from Jake Moody prevented the Niners from pulling out the victory.
Getting even one of Samuel or McCaffrey back in the lineup would be huge boost to the 49ers' hopes of returning to their offensive form of the first five weeks against a much more vulnerable Vikings defense.
As such, head coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Brock Purdy will be delighted to hear of the progress Samuel has already made and, with the extra day to heal before they attempt to get back to winning ways, they will hope the 2021 All-Pro is in a position to exert his playmaking influence on the offense and help the 49ers improve to 6-1.
