While the San Francisco 49ers are still working to fill their coaching vacancies, they have addressed the hole left by Adam Peters' departure from the front office with two in-house promotions.
Peters, who was previously the 49ers' assistant general manager, left to take the general manager job with the Washington Commanders prior to San Francisco's appearance in Super Bowl 58.
Speaking just over two weeks on from the Niners' defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, general manager John Lynch confirmed RJ Gillen and Tariq Ahmad had both been promoted to the shared title of director of player personnel.
Gillen previously served in the role of director of pro personnel, while Ahmad was the 49ers' director of college scouting.
Ahmad has been with the 49ers since 2014, with Gillen joining the organization a year later.
They will now have an even greater influence on how the 49ers' roster is constructed going forward, and the outcome of their input will be critical in a hugely important 2024 draft for San Francisco, which is projected to hold 11 picks, including its first pick on day one since 2021.
